Diamondbacks Rough Up White Sox Starter Jose Quintana In 10-2 Victory

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Paul Goldschmidt drove in two runs with a pair of doubles, Tuffy Gosewich had four hits and the Arizona Diamondbacks roughed up Jose Quintana, beating the Chicago White Sox, 10-2, on Thursday.

Quintana was tagged for six runs and eight hits in two innings.

"I missed with breaking balls. When this happens, you get doubles or good swings," Quintana said. "But I feel great. I don't think about that. I think about the season."

Chris Owings hit a two-run double as Arizona scored five times in the second. Nick Ahmed had two hits and two RBIs for the Diamondbacks.

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said his team handled Quintana well.

"He made some good pitches and we hit them," Hale said. "Great to see the guys feeling good about their swings right now."

Arizona starter Rubby De La Rosa gave up one run and four hits in six innings.

"Right now I feel completely good. My four pitches were working really good," De La Rosa said.

Chicago's Tyler Flowers was ejected after being called out on a close play at first base in the seventh.

The White Sox broke camp in Arizona and play at Triple-A affiliate Charlotte on Friday.

TRANSACTIONS

The White Sox reassigned pitchers Brad Penny and Scott Carroll to minor league camp before the game. Carroll pitched in Wednesday's game in place of Penny, who was ill.

"I just need innings," said Penny, a two-time All-Star. "I want to get out there every fifth day and pitch and I think it's better for me to stay starting right now just so I can get the innings and get everything going."

TRAINER'S ROOM

White Sox: Pitcher Chris Sale is expected to make one more start in Arizona before joining the team in Chicago. Sale is coming back from a foot injury that delayed his start to spring training, and he never appeared in an exhibition game. ... 2B Micah Johnson, who'll open the season on the major league roster, got up slowly after diving to stop an infield hit in the first inning and was checked by a trainer. He stayed in the game.
