DeKalb Animal Shelter Holding On To Pets While Tornado Victims Find Living Arrangements

(CBS) -- At least one animal shelter near tornado-ravaged Fairdale is housing several pets, but not because they can't find the owners.

A couple of hours after the tornado hit, the DeKalb County Animal Welfare League in Genoa received its first litter of lost animals - five dogs.

President Roberta Shoaf says four belonged to the same owners and one of the animals was blind.

The blind dog and one other dog were taken home by their owners, but the others are waiting until their owners find more permanent housing now that their homes have been severely damaged or destroyed.

Shoaf says that's the same situation with two cats that they have right now and five more dogs they're expected to get.

They know who the owners are but they can't take back their pets until they figure out where all of them are going to live.

She says they've received two vans full of donated dog and cat food and are offering that to owners who have lost most of their belongings.
