Architecture Group Honors Former Mayor Daley

(CBS) -- Chicago's retired Mayor Richard M. Daley was honored Thursday night by the Chicago Architecture Foundation for his work to beautify Chicago.

Away from the microphone, it was vintage Daley -- laughing heartily and often shaking hands, posing for photos and moving with ease through the room. He looked slightly  thinner than during his time in the mayor's office, and wore glasses.

He spoke to the crowd for less than a minute, thanking those who worked with him in planning during his 22 years as mayor, and the architects who built and renovated the city, its Loop and neighborhoods.

Architecture Foundation President/CEO Lynn Osmond called Daley Chicago's "chief planner" as mayor.  She said that he encouraged architects to think boldly and think green, oversaw creation of the museum campus and expanded the park system, with Millennium Park as its "crown jewel."

Nearly 700 people attended the Foundation's 40th annual gala, at the Bridgeport Art Center, 1200 W. 35th St.

Daley was hospitalized last year, reportedly for stroke-like symptoms.
