4 Dead, 30 Wounded In Weekend Shootings

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Four people were killed and at least 30 others were wounded in shootings across Chicago since late Friday afternoon, police said.

The most recent fatal shooting happened early Sunday in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

About 6:30 a.m., a 34-year-old woman and a man – thought to be in his 20s – were walking in the 2700 block of North Lavergne when someone got out of a car and opened fire, police said.

The woman was struck in the head and the man was shot multiple times, police said.

They were both taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where they were both later pronounced dead, police said.

Police said the shooting may have been gang-related.

The Cook County medical examiner's office could not confirm the deaths Sunday evening.

About an hour earlier, a 43-year-old man was found fatally shot in Little Village on the Southwest Side.

Luis A. Perez was found with a gunshot wound to the head about 5:20 a.m. Sunday in the 2300 block of South Washtenaw, according to police and the medical examiner's office.

Perez, of the 2700 block of West 24th Street, was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

A police source said the victim had documented gang ties.

The weekend's first fatal shooting happened in the West Side Humboldt Park neighborhood Friday night.

About 10:50 p.m., 36-year-old Courtney Jackson and another man were in a car in the 1100 block of North Springfield, when someone walked up and fired shots in their direction, police said. The shooter then ran away.

Both men showed up at the hospital after the shooting.

Jackson, of the 1400 block of North Lotus, was shot in the chest and was pronounced dead at Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center at 1:21 a.m. Saturday, according to police and the medical examiner's office.

The other man, 35, was shot in the neck and is listed in serious condition at the same hospital, police said.

In the most recent nonfatal incident, three people were shot near the University of Chicago campus early Monday.

Two men and a woman were sitting in a parked silver car in an alley in the 5400 block of South Ellis at 12:30 a.m. when a male walked up and fired shots, police said.

According to a security alert sent to University of Chicago students, the three victims are not affiliated with the school but ran into a campus parking garage at 55th and Ellis after the shooting. University police also responded to the shooting.

The 22-year-old woman was shot in the chest and abdomen and taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, police said.

One of the men, 35, was shot in the left and leg and was also taken to Stroger, where his condition stabilized, police said.

The other man, 24, was shot in the chin, chest and left leg and was taken in serious condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

A police source said the two men are both documented gang members.

"The motive for the shooting is unknown and there is no suspect information at this time," according to the alert sent out by the university.

Earlier Sunday, five people were shot in two separate shootings that were minutes apart in the Humboldt Park neighborhood Sunday afternoon.

Two 16-year-old boys were shot about 1:50 p.m. in the 900 block of North Trumbull, police said. The teens were inside a vehicle when another vehicle pulled alongside and someone fired shots, striking both teens.

One boy was shot in the buttocks and the other was shot in the toe, police said. They both showed up at Norwegian American Hospital, where their conditions had stabilized.

A few minutes earlier, three men were shot about one mile west in the 900 block of North Karlov, police said.

About 1:45 p.m., the three were outside when they "heard shots and felt pain," police said.

An 18-year-old shot in the buttocks and a 21-year-old shot in the left thigh were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said. Another 18-year-old was shot in the left hip and taken to Stroger Hospital, police said.

All three were listed in good condition.

Police could not confirm if the shootings were related Sunday evening.

At least 21 others have been shot since Friday afternoon.

Also, an 18-year-old man was shot to death by a Chicago Police officer Friday night in the South Shore neighborhood.

About 10:10 p.m., Grand Crossing District officers on patrol near 71st Street and Paxton Avenue heard shots fired and saw a van speeding away from the area, according to a statement from Chicago Police.

A pursuit began, and the officers watched someone jump from the vehicle with a gun in his hand, police Deputy Chief Dana Alexander told reporters at the scene.

The officers chased the man — identified as Jeffery Kemp — to 74th Street and Merrill Avenue and ordered him to drop the weapon, but instead he turned around and pointed it at the officers, authorities said. An officer then fired two shots, striking the man.

Kemp, of the 7400 block of South Jeffery, was dead at the scene, according to the medical examiner's office.

Police said a gun was recovered at the scene. No officers were injured.

The Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates all police-involved shootings, has been notified, spokesman Larry Merritt said.
