Dog Shot In Gary Recovering After Losing Leg

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A dog that was shot along with his owner in Gary, Indiana, last week has lost one leg, but otherwise is expected to make a full recovery.

Gary police have said Keith Dumas, 48, was walking his dog, C.J., on Friday, when someone shot Dumas multiple times. C.J. was shot in the leg.

C.J. was up and around, and doing well Tuesday at the Westchester Animal Clinic in Chesterton, Indiana.

"He's healing nicely already, and we just took the leg out a few days ago. He walks like a dog that has walked that way his whole life," said veterinarian Dr. Larry Reed.

He said it was the most difficult amputation he's ever performed, because the tissue was so badly damaged.

"It's a horrible thing. A dog that's running away; this dog was shot, the path of that bullet shows that the dog was running away, with its leg up in the air," he said. "The dog was running from him. There's no reason to shoot it. It wasn't a danger to them. Of course, neither was the poor man that was walking his dog."

Dumas, a father of two teenage girls, was killed in the shooting. His daughters plan to care for C.J. after he leaves the clinic.
