Bears Select DT Eddie Goldman In 2nd Round

(CBS) With their second-round pick, the Bears selected Florida State defensive tackle Eddie Goldman at No. 39 overall in the NFL Draft on Friday night.

The 6-foot-4, 320-pound Goldman will beef up the interior of Chicago's defensive line as it transitions to the 3-4 scheme of new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Goldman entered the draft following a junior season in which he was named first-team All-ACC and an AP first-team All-American. He had 19 tackles, eight tackles for loss and four sacks in 2014.

Goldman could play nose tackle or possibly the five-technique. He's not considered a pass-rushing threat by the experts, but he graded out well as a run-stuffer. Goldman will likely be behind defensive tackle Jeremiah Ratliff on the depth chart, a player he idolizes and picked his college number because of.

"That was one of the first things I thought about was actually being in the locker room with him (Ratliff)," Goldman said. "I don't know if he has No. 90 or not, but it will be great. During the draft process I met with Andre Gurode and he said that Jay Ratilff was one of the best guys he went up against. I just look forward to learning a lot from him and playing next to him."

Goldman is a Washington, D.C. native, who didn't start playing football until he was in eighth grade. He started as a boxer, which he said helped out with his hand quickness. He considers himself a well-rounded prospect, but realizes he must continue to round out his game at the next level.

"All aspects of my game can use improvement," Goldman said. "Pass rushing is something scouts knocked me for, but I think I can pass rush with the best of them. We'll just have to wait and see. I'm definitely going to prove everyone wrong."

Goldman didn't work out at the Scouting Combine due to an ankle injury. However, he did show well at his Pro Day in positional and timed drills, running a 5.12-second 40-yard dash.

The Bears hold one more pick Friday night, at No. 71 overall, in the third round.
