Bit Space Chicago Offers Hands-On Summer Camp For Kids Who Like To Build Things

(CBS) -- Parents looking for a more educational and hands-on experience for their kids this summer may want to try a new camp for those interested in making things.

Bit Space in Lincoln Square is equipped with 3D printers, laser cutters, computer-controller routers among other tools that would allow kids to take a concept from the computer into reality.

IIT Architecture Professor Thomas Kearns is director and part owner.

He says the space is like a maker lab with a curriculum, helping kids from elementary to high school learn about design, engineering and technology.

During a typical week-long camp this summer, Kearns says kids will design and make small scale furniture such as a stool or birdhouse.

It's like re-thinking the old shop class that many people took in high school, he says, exposing children to the process and making them creative thinkers early in life.
