Were Dresses Worn By Beyonce, J Lo and Kim Kardashian At Met Gala Too Revealing?

(CBS) -- Beyonce, J-Lo, and Kim are three ladies who don't need full names and who didn't wear full dresses to a big New York bash.

They're sparking a conversation about bad taste and body image all over social media Tuesday.

CBS 2's Mai Martinez takes a look at the dresses and the message they might be sending.

The Met Gala is one of the biggest fashion events of the year with all eyes on the red carpet and its endless parade of celebrities, models and movers and shakers wearing designer gowns.

But this year, dresses worn by Kim Kardashian, Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez quickly became the talk of social media and the town for being too revealing.

"They wore that to a black tie event?? Oh my goodness. Absolutely not," said Linnae Smith. "I think you can be fashionable and classy with something different on for sure."

Emanuel Phillips says the dresses are "Horrible" because, "It's revealing too much of the body."

Phillips says the women are role model to young girls, even if they don't choose to be, and by dressing so sexually, they're sending the wrong message.

Psychotherapist Dr. Michele Kerulis agrees.

"When they see their favorite stars dressing away that is over sexualized and they see all the attention that the women receive, I think the young girls think they have to dress that way in order to get attention as well," Dr. Kerulis said.

But two 23-year-old psychology students say there's also a positive message being sent.

"She is promoting some type of confidence in women who are curvier," said Kimberly Alba.

"It's okay to be sexy and it's okay to wear things that make you feel good and that show off your curves," said Victoria Bernard.

The Met Gala is a "costume ball." Monday night's theme was "China: Through the Looking Glass."

Mai Martinez reports many people weighing in on her Facebook and Twitter accounts about this story, and the overwhelming response has been that these dresses were trashy, not classy.
