Report: Pelicans Waiting To See What Lies Ahead For Tom Thibodeau

(CBS) In 2010, New Orleans offered its vacant coaching position to Tom Thibodeau before he chose to come to Chicago to lead the Bulls.

Now with Thibodeau's coaching future in doubt with the Bulls amid a contentious relationship with the front office, it appears the Pelicans will again chase Thibodeau.

After firing Monty Williams earlier this week, the Pelicans will wait to see if Thibodeau and the Bulls part ways before they make a coaching hire, the Times-Picayune's John Reid reported. That doesn't mean Thibodeau's the favorite, but he does appear to be on the short list should he be in need of work.

New Orleans is one of three open jobs right now, along with Orlando and Denver. The Pelicans are considered the most attractive because of 22-year-old Anthony Davis' rise to superstardom and the fact that they're coming off a 45-win season in which they earned the eighth seed in the West before being swept by the Warriors in the first round of the playoffs.

Yahoo Sports NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski has gone so far as to report that a Bulls-Thibodeau parting of the ways is "inevitable," and the Chicago Tribune has reported that the relationship between Bulls management and Thibodeau is "beyond repair."

For his part, Thibodeau has more pressing matters on hand at the moment, as the Bulls are on the brink of elimination in trailing 3-2 against the Cavaliers heading into Game 6 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series tonight at the United Center.
