Worker Electrocuted On North Side

(CBS) -- A worker was electrocuted Saturday afternoon on the North Side, officials said.

The man was electrocuted Saturday afternoon while he was in a "basket," a lifting device, near North and Halsted Street, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Will Knight says. The incident was first reported around 4:53 p.m., and first-responders were on the scene into the evening.

Initial reports on the police scanner indicated the worker had come into contact with power lines along the railroad tracks. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as Kevin Benoit, 30, of Midlothian. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A CTA spokesperson said the victim appeared to be a contractor who was working in connection with a project to renovate the Brown Line elevated tracks.
