Naperville Mayor Cool To Governor's Anti-Labor Agenda

(CBS) -- The mayor of west suburban Naperville says his city is not prepared to endorse Gov. Bruce Rauner's entire "Turnaround Agenda," despite pressures to do so.

New Mayor Steve Chirico is a businessman who says he and the City Council agree with many parts of the governor's agenda, such as lawsuit reform and changes to workers compensation.

But they don't support his anti-union rhetoric.

"Naperville's a little different," Chirico tells WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore. "We have been well-managed. It's been well-governed for many, many years. We're responsible, we're financially disciplined and we have good relationships with our collective bargaining units."

When Rauner appeared before the Naperville City Council recently, he asked for support for his entire agenda, including establishment of so-called "right-to-work" zones across the state. The Council did not endorse the package.

Chirico he's glad to hear Rauner's latest blueprint seemed to drop the anti-union measures.

The mayor is the guest on "At Issue" this weekend. You can hear more of his comments Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m.
