Suspect In Custody After Woman Shot In McKinley Park

Updated 05/27/15 - 11:08 a.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Bullets riddled a McKinley Park home late Tuesday night, following an argument between two men, and a 61-year old woman was shot in the neck.

The woman was sitting on the couch in her living room in the 3600 block of South Honore Street around 10:20 p.m. when she was shot.

Police said, earlier in the night, two man had been fighting in a nearby alley. One of the men apparently lived in the woman's home, and after he went inside, the other man came back and fired shots into the house, striking the woman in the neck.

The woman was recovering from surgery Wednesday morning at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County.

At least seven bullet holes were left in the front window of her home.

One neighbor across the street said he heard the gunfire.

"I thought it was leftover fireworks, but these sounded different. They were like consistent, and I was, like, 'Whoa.' They were loud, too, and I was like 'That's rare. That's more than usual,'" Abundo Perez said. "It's scary, because when you think about it that could have been me, if it was on this side. It was very close. But then it's kind of like you don't really want to have this experience at all, because my mom, she was scared. Everybody was scared."

After the shooting, the gunman fled the scene in a vehicle, and sped onto the outbound Stevenson Expressway. Police officers chased him until he crashed at the I-294 interchange near Hodgkins.

The man was taken into custody. Detectives were questioning him Wednesday morning. Police said they believe the shooting was gang-related.
