Police: Man Fatally Shot In Lakeview After Apparent Fight

(CBS) -- Police are investigating the shooting death of a man last night near a popular strip of bars in the Lakeview neighborhood, reports WBBM's Mike Krauser.

The scene of the shooting was under the Red Line 'L' tracks at Oakdale. It happened at 2 a.m. according to police and it may have been an armed robbery turned murder.

The 25-year-old man was shot in the chest after apparently scuffling with another man. The Cook County medical examiner's office identified the victim as Kevin O'Malley.

Police say they are talking to a person of interest.

CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot talked to a a woman who heard an argument before the shooting.

"I happened to wake up. I heard some really loud shouting," she said. "It continued maybe 8 to 10 minutes just goingback and forth and fighting, and it definitely sounded like punches were being thrown because you definitely heard points where it got rough and they just stopped talking, It definitely got physical. One of the gentleman kind of said 'Well, I'm going to make sure I rough you up.' And the other guy came in and was like, 'Don't worry I'm going to take charge of this.'"

She said a train went by and it stopped.

"Once the train had gone by, there was absolutely nothing else going on," she said.
She believes the man was shot while the train was going by.

Joanne Moss who works in Lakeview said it is unnerving and the neighborhood has its problems like anywhere else, but murders are rare.

"I worry so much every time I see young people walking home late at night by themselves or two girls and one of them walks the rest of the way by herself," Moss said.

Police are continuing to investigate.
