4-Year-Old Wounded In Shooting Leaves Hospital
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The 4-year-old South Side girl shot in the head Memorial Day weekend in West Englewood has been discharged from the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital this morning.
Jacele Johnson, whose mother was about to move her family to Minneapolis to escape the Chicago violence before the May 22 attack happened, will be taken by ambulance to Minnesota with her family.
"I want to thank God for covering my daughter through this whole process," Jacele's mother, Trennetta Gresham said outside the hospital on Monday. "I also want to thank everyone from Chicago to Minnesota for the prayers that they gave out for Jacele.
"I want to thank Comer Children's Hospital for their patience, their love and their tender care. I also want to thank Dr. Warnke and his team of angels for saving Jacele's life. I want to thank the city of Chicago police for your aid and assist.
"I also want to tell everyone in Chicago to please put the guns down because you're killing our future and our city."
Jacele initially was taken to the hospital in critical condition after the shooting outside a prom party near 70th Street and South Justine.
She was upgraded to fair condition last week.
Jacele was sitting in her family's car when she was shot, and police believe the family was not the intended target of the attack.
Doctors removed bone fragments and repaired blood vessels, but a portion of the bullet is too dangerous to be removed surgically
