Education Help Chicago Tech Export Prepare For Fast Paced Field
Carlos Estevez started working for Elgin School District U-46 approximately four years ago in the I.S. department as a level one tech. Estevez said, that he loves working with the students and staff, and the possibilities of advancement are endless.
Estevez attended Elgin Community College to pursue the career of electrical engineering, which introduced him to computer technology and also to computer programing. He fell in love with it and wanted to continue pursuing additional education in computer engineering or computer programming.
Estevez's first job in the technology world came in 1988 when he worked at TresComp, a technology company that made and assembled circuit boards for Motorola, that was his first hands-on experience with a computer. He also worked at Petsmart, Inc. for 16 years as an assistant director, and with his technology education and background he supported a vast amount of technology equipment that was used to provide excellent customer service. Estevez shares his experiences and thoughts on what it takes to work successfully as a level one tech in a school district.
What are the responsibilities of your current role?
"My role requires me to have strong organizational skills, strong management and communication skills, to be responsible and experienced in the support of technology systems and able to support all computer equipment, peripherals and networks. I have to be able to facilitate in a timely manner the help needed in order to have a successful integration of technology to all students for their success in their future careers and life."
What is your favorite part of your daily duties?
"My favorite part is to be able troubleshoot and execute successfully any given problem, and to make sure that teachers understand how their technology works to better implement their knowledge to students."
Do you feel your education prepared you for your current role?
"Yes, my education did prepare me. As I was pursuing my career in electrical engineering, I was introduced to this fast growing technology, which was relatively new. I was amazed by it and immediately knew that this new technology will never go away and that it will become part of our daily lives."
Do you have any advice for people who desire to pursue a similar career?
"My only advice is to always stay current in this technology; as it changes everyday, we learn something new every day. The computer era will stay with us forever."
