After The Bell: Airfares Starting To Get A Whole Lot Cheaper

By Andy Giersher

(CBS) -- There's a reason for airline passengers to get excited about traveling this summer, two words: Airfare War!

Southwest Airlines kicked things off last week, announcing a mega sale that drove so much online traffic, it crashed the company's website. Now the big question: will the other major carriers follow suit?

"When all the consolidation happened in the industry, most people thought we would never see an airfare war again, but we still have four major airlines left and I think we are going to see some softening in airfares as people resist some of the high airfares we've seen over the last year," says George Hobica, founder of Airfarewatchdog.com.

He also noted airfares from Chicago to almost anywhere in the country can be found for under $200 roundtrip.
