Two Dead In Park Forest Crash

Updated 06/10/15 - 11:45 a.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two people were killed overnight, when a stolen car struck a tree in south suburban Park Forest. The driver was arrested after fleeing the scene.

Three people were in the car when it crashed into a tree near Western Avenue and Algonquin Street around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Police said the driver ran off after the crash, leaving the two passengers behind. Neighbors were told to stay inside while K-9 units searched for the driver, who later walked into St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights, where he was taken into custody.

One passenger was taken to St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields, and was pronounced dead. The other died at the scene.

Friends said the two victims are 15 and 17 years old.

"I didn't cry the whole way here. I didn't cry last night when I heard. I didn't cry at all, until I seen it, and it was real," said childhood friend Nakia Hughes. "That's sad, because we are too young. We are only 17."

Josh Perry witnessed the crash, and said it's one of the worst he's ever seen. It was so bad, he didn't think it was possible for anyone to have survived.

"One of the police officers told me that we should get inside, and stay inside, because somebody had run from the accident scene, which is crazy, because it didn't look like anybody would have gotten out, and walked out of that car," Perry said.

Police said the driver was speeding, and alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Charges were pending late Wednesday morning.
