Bulls Name Jim Boylen Their Associate Head Coach

(CBS) The Bulls have Jim Boylen to be their associate head coach on new coach Fred Hoiberg's staff, the team announced Wednesday morning.

Boylen, 50, has 29 years of coaching experience, 17 of them coming in the NBA. He spent the last two years as an assistant in San Antonio under Gregg Popovich, serving on staff as the Spurs won the 2014 NBA title.

Prior to that, Boylen was a Pacers assistant for two seasons under Frank Vogel. Indiana was first in the league in defensive efficiency in 2012-'13 and ninth in 2011-'12 while Boylen was there.

Boylen's expected to have a leading role in working with the Bulls' defense.

"I am very excited to add Jim to our staff as our associate head coach," Hoiberg said in a statement. "His track record speaks for itself with nearly 30 years of coaching experience and three NBA championships on his resume. His work ethic and attention to detail will help our team every day, and I look forward to working with him as we prepare for next season."

Boylen broke into the NBA in 1992 with the Rockets on coach Rudy Tomjanovich's staff, staying for 11 seasons in Houston. He worked for the Warriors in 2003-'04 and the Bucks in 2004-'05. He then moved to the collegiate level, serving as an assistant at Michigan State and coming Utah for four seasons, from 2007-'11, when he led the Utes to a 69-60 mark and a trip to the 2009 NCAA Tournament.

"We are fortunate to be able to add someone with the credentials that Jim has," Bulls general manager Gar Forman said in a statement. "He will be a big asset to Fred and our players."
