Arson Investigators Examining Four Small Fires At Gold Coast Hotel

(CBS) -- Chicago Police and Fire Department arson investigators are looking into four fires that were set early this morning at the Sofitel Hotel in the Gold Coast neighborhood, reports WBBM's Mike Krauser.

Firefighters and police were called to the hotel at 20 East Chestnut at 2 a.m. Saturday morning for what was initially reported as a small rubbish fire near a 12th floor elevator that was put out by hotel staff. A towel and some newspapers had been set on fire.

Then on the 14th floor someone ignited a pillow. While that was being checked out, there was a third fire on the 16th floor and a fourth fire on the 31st floor, both pillow fires.

According to the Chicago Tribune, a hotel guest reporting seeing someone set that fire and run away.

Police found that the door leading to the roof on the 33rd floor open but a search of the roof and the hotel turned up no suspects.
