Michigan Ave. Demonstration Targets Use Of Horse Carriages

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago's horse carriages were targeted by protesters this afternoon on Michigan Avenue.

The protesters stood on the edge of the Water Tower Park on Michigan Avenue at Pearson Street, a staging area for the carriages.

One held a sign reading, "Traffic is no place for horses," as carriage operators looked on.

Jody Whittaker, with the Chicago Alliance for Animals, believes it's inhumane.

"We just don't feel that horses belong in Chicago's congested traffic and extreme temperatures," she said. "There's been numerous accidents with busses, with cars, with taxis. There's also been many horses that have collapsed in extreme heat. It's just no life for a horse, their nose to a tail pipe every day in traffic."

She says they belong in a field with other horses.

Corey Newberry sat on her carriage, shaking her head at the demonstrators.

"We treat the animals very well," she said.

Another carriage operator said the horses get regular check-ups and there are no problems.

The demonstration was peaceful, with supporters holding signs and passing out flyers to people passing by. There were no confrontations.
