With Cell Phone Thefts On The Rise, Police Say There Are Ways To Protect Yourself
(CBS) -- While the practice of stealing iPhones, iPads and other mobile devices is nothing new, "Apple picking" has become the modern day street crime.
Brian White with the Cook County Sheriff's Department says they've seen more strong armed robberies and thefts in recent years, but he says now there are new ways to protect yourself.

"There are apps you can download...download one of these apps, they will remotely track, lock and or erase your personal information on your smart phone," he said.
White says there are simple ways to avoid become a victim: be aware of your surroundings, don't display your smartphone, don't wear the signature earbuds that tells a potential thieve you have what they want.
According to the FCC, About 40 percent of thefts in major American cities now involve cell phones.
While the city of Chicago hasn't seen a spike in smartphone thefts, officials say it remains a concern.
In New York City, police say Apple's iPhone has become "by far" the most popular target. The city's overall crime rate increased last year due to a spike in stolen Apple devices.
