The Bernstein Brief: 22nd Pick Is Usually Bad

(CBS) Drafts are fun because new is fun. Disbursement of talent is inherently exciting merely due to the unknowns in another class of NBA wannabees, grabbing their team logo caps and gushing about their new team and city, only to be traded five minutes later for the rights to a different seven-foot Montenegrin.
Commentators will rave into the night over repeated highlights of baseline jumpers outside trapezoidal lanes and dunks on the heads of bums, despite the fact that most of the names will be soon forgotten by anyone but the most zealous hoops junkies.
And we'll wait for the Bulls to pick at No. 22, likely grabbing somebody who mostly sucks.
For every Kenneth Faried, there are three of Zoran Planinic. The chance of landing something as useful as Jarrett Jack is far less likely than finding the next Casey Jacobsen, Victor Claver or Elliot Williams.
If they stay where they are, the Bulls are shopping at the shelves in the back, hoping to find something in a less popular size or style that may be just right for them, lookin' for a come-up.
