Stormy Weather: Wettest June On Record For Illinois; Second Wettest Month Ever

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A very rainy June for Illinois was not only the wettest June on record, but it was the second rainiest month ever recorded in 120 years.

Illinois State Climatologist Jim Angel said, as of June 29, the statewide average rainfall for June was 9.37 inches, more than double the monthly average of 4.2 inches for June.

This month's rainfall easily beat the previous record for June, set in 1902, when June's statewide average rainfall was 8.27 inches.

According to Angel, the total so far for June is just shy of the wettest month ever recorded in Illinois – September 1926, at 9.62 inches.

With more rain falling in parts of Illinois on Monday and Tuesday, it's possible the statewide average for this June could go even higher.

This month was also the first time there has been a monthly rainfall average of 9 inches or more outside of the fall. The only three other times a month's average rainfall exceeded 9 inches in Illinois were September 1926, October 1941, and November 1985, according to Angel.

According to a map provided by the Illinois State Water Survey, the regions hardest hit by rain were a wide swath from southeastern LaSalle County to Kankakee County and northern Iroquois County; a large area just south of Peoria, covering parts of Peoria, Tazewell, Mason, Menard, Fulton, and McDonough counties; a large portion southeastern Illinois, in Crawford, Larence, Jasper, Richland, Clay, Effingham, Marion, Fayette, Jefferson, and Wayne counties; and along the Missouri border, just north of St. Louis, in Pike and Calhoun counties. All three of those regions saw 15 inches of rain or more in some locations.
