Fireworks, Grateful Dead Concerts Highlight Busy 4th Of July Weekend In Chicago

(CBS) -- It's a big weekend along the lakefront-- with picnics, fireworks and the Grateful Dead "Fare Thee Well" concerts.

CBS 2's Jeremy Ross breaks down all the exciting events.

The first of three Grateful Dead shows this weekend kicked off Friday night.

Call it the start of peace love, and only a piece of all the events over the holiday.

The sign may say Solider Field, but outside people meet at the intersection of concert and culture.

"It's also a subculture a moment and ideology," said Raustin Hernandez. "It's like a family reunion."

Tens of thousands from across the world including, Hernandez, made the trip.

In Evanston, those hoping to stay close to the parade like Cree Max and family, marked off their perfect spots for the parade.

Hundreds lined the streets with blankets and chairs.

"It's great sitting here next to the judges stand," Max said.

Spots for Saturday's fireworks will be in high demand at Navy Pier. They'll lock the gates when space fills up, but some enjoy the company.

The fireworks show at Navy Pier begins at 9:30 and will last about 15 minutes.
