Cubs' Bryant, Rizzo Named All-Star Reserves

By Chris Emma--

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Cubs rookie phenom third baseman Kris Bryant and first baseman Anthony Rizzo have been named as reserve players for the All-Star Game on July 14 in Cincinnati.

Bryant batted .279 with 12 home runs and 49 RBIs in his first 71 games in the majors. He was voted in by National League manager Bruce Bochy of the San Francisco Giants. Rizzo is making his second All-Star Game appearance, having hit .292 with 15 home runs and 45 RBIs.

Last year, Rizzo earned his trip to the All-Star Game by way of the Final Vote contest. This year, he was selected by vote from the players.

"It's just awesome," Rizzo said. "It's a great honor to get that from the players."

Both Rizzo and Bryant learned of their All-Star placement from Cubs manager Joe Maddon, just an hour before their 7:05 game with the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field on Monday evening. Each got to their phones to call friends and family members.

"It's going to be really special for me," Bryant said.

Bryant said that he hopes to participate in baseball's Home Run Derby, held on July 13. While no official invitation has been extended, the rookie may be called upon.

The selection of Rizzo marks the first time a Cubs player has been selected to consecutive All-Star games since Starlin Castro in 2011 and 2012.

"It's going to be a great experience, just to be there again," Rizzo said.

The 86th All-Star Game will be held on July 14 at Cincinnati's Great American Ballpark.
