Melissa Calusinski's Family Hopes She's Out Of Prison Soon

(CBS) -- The father of daycare worker convicted in a toddler's death met with her for the first time this weekend after new evidence lead to the coroner changing the manner of the toddler's death.

A daycare worker is imprisoned for his death, but her family is, as CBS 2's Brad Edwards reports, hoping for not much longer.

Former daycare worker Melissa Calusinski was convicted in the death of toddler Ben Kingan at a Lincolnshire daycare center in 2009.

Paul Calusinski went to the Logan Correction Center, the 2,000 convict capacity prison where his daughter is serving a 31-year sentence in the death of toddler Ben Kingan.

"Oh my God, at first, she was crying," Paul said.

Recently discovered X-rays indicate that Kingan died of a previous injury and last week the Lake County coroner changed the manner of death from homicide to undetermined.

CBS'S 48 Hours first exposed the nearly nine hour interrogation. In that ninth hour, Calusinski admitted to the crime after 79 previous denials.

Her dad was hoping that the change in the manner of death might lead to a speedy release, but six days later, nothing.

"I love you Melissa," Paul said. "We're fighting to get you home. It's not gonna be much longer. You need to hang in there more."

The state attorney's office is continuing to review the case and there's a court date in September.

There are a number of avenues for potential relief, the family though is hoping for something now.
