Protests Continue Over Daycare Worker's Conviction

(CBS) – Protests continued Thursday over the conviction and imprisonment of Melissa Calusinksi, the former daycare worker convicted in the 2009 death of a toddler.

Her conviction and prison sentence are being challenged after the Lake County coroner said the death of Benjamin Kingan was no longer considered a homicide, due to new evidence.

Protesters, friends, family members and supporters took to the streets of Waukegan.

"There is no reason for my daughter to be in jail today," Paul Calusinski said as he led protesters.

Among those speaking at a demonstration was her preacher and a pathologist.

Attorney Kathleen Zellner says she expects Melissa Calusinski's conviction will not hold up.

One juror reached by CBS 2 Thursday said she thought the panel reached the right verdict.

Prosecutors say they are reviewing the case.
