Heat Advisory For Chicago Area On Saturday

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Warning of an "oppressive" combination of heat and humidity over the next two days, the National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the Chicago area for much of Saturday.

The official temperature in Chicago had already reached 86 degrees at O'Hare International Airport by noon Friday, and was expected to reach a high in the low 90s. With high humidity levels, it could feel as hot as 103.

Saturday could be even hotter, with a high in the mid 90s, and a heat index of up to 110.

As a result, the National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the entire Chicago area on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.

"The combination of heat and humidity will create oppressive conditions, which may cause heat related illnesses to develop due to prolonged exposure, particularly the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions," the service said.

The best advice amid such hot conditions is to stay indoors, especially in an air conditioned room, and to stay out of the sun.

In such hot and humid conditions, anyone working or spending a significant amount of time outside should take extra precautions, including avoiding any strenuous activity, if possible, between early morning and late afternoon. You should also wear light-weight and loose-fitting clothes, and drink plenty of water.

If you do have to work outdoors during the day, take frequent breaks in shaded or air conditioned areas.

You can also call (800) 843-6154 to find a cooling center near you.
