Chicago Police Officer Shoots Robbery Suspect In Heart Of Chicago

(STMW) -- A Chicago Police officer shot a robbery suspect who pointed a gun at authorities early Sunday in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood, police said.

The shooting happened at 3:45 a.m. in the 2300 block of West 21st Street, police said.

Officers who responded to a robbery call in the 2200 block of South Western Avenue got a description of the suspect from the victim and disseminated it over their radio, police said.

Other officers who heard the radio transmission saw a male matching the description in the 2300 block of West 21st Street, police said. They exited their squad car and ordered him to stop, but he refused, police said.

He then pulled out a handgun from his waistband and pointed it toward police, prompting one of the officers to shoot him "in fear for their safety," police said.

The male then ran off, but police took him into custody after a brief chase, police said.

The male, whose age wasn't released, was taken to a hospital for treatment. His condition was not known. No one else was injured.

No charges had been filed as of Sunday morning in the incident. The Independent Police Review Authority, which looks at all police-involved shootings, is investigating.
