3 Killed, 31 Wounded In Weekend Shootings

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Three men were killed and at least 31 other people wounded in shootings across the city since Friday evening.

In the most recent fatal shooting, a 25-year-old man was shot repeatedly late Saturday in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side.

Officers responding to a call of shots fired about 10 p.m. in the 500 block of North Avers found Elbert Farris on the ground outside with multiple gunshot wounds, including at least one to the head, police said.

Farris, of the 800 block of North Latrobe, was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Early Saturday, a 30-year-old man was found shot dead inside a vehicle in the South Side Englewood neighborhood.

About 4 a.m., officers discovered Jemel O'Brien slumped over the wheel of a white car in the 7400 block of South Eggleston with gunshot wounds to the arm and groin, authorities said.

O'Brien, of the 400 block of West 75th Street, was dead at the scene.

Three hours earlier, a 25-year-old man was killed and an 18-year-old man injured in a shooting in the North Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side, police said.

The two were in the 3500 block of West Grenshaw about 1 a.m. when a light-colored van pulled up and someone inside opened fire, police said.

The older man was shot several times in the chest and arm. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. Authorities were not releasing his name Sunday night.

The younger man also suffered a graze wound to his back. His condition had stabilized, police said.

The most recent nonfatal shooting happened early Monday in North Lawndale.

The shooting happened in the 3900 block of West Roosevelt about 2:50 a.m., police said.

The 22-year-old man walked into Mount Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound to the foot, police said. He was listed in good condition.

The weekend's first shooting left five men wounded in West Garfield Park about 5 p.m. Friday.

The men were standing outside about in the 4400 block of West Maypole when someone fired shots, police said. The shooter then jumped into a compact SUV, which sped away.

A 21-year-old man was shot in the back and chest, and was taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said. A 22-year-old was shot in the right elbow and taken in good condition to Stroger Hospital.

A 19-year-old was shot in the right hand, and a 23-year-old was shot in the left hand, but hospital information was not immediately available, police said. Another 19-year-old suffered a graze wound to the left leg and was treated at the scene.

At least 24 other people have been shot in other attacks since 6:20 p.m. Friday.

Additionally, Chicago Police officers shot two people in separate incidents over the weekend.

Most recently, an officer shot a male suspect who they said was repeatedly beating another person with a bat about 4 a.m. in the 1500 North Clybourn in Lincoln Park. The suspect—whose age wasn't known—and the battery victim were taken to hospitals in unknown conditions.

Early Sunday, police shot a robbery suspect who pointed a gun at authorities at 3:45 p.m. in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood, police said. The suspect, whose age wasn't known, was being treated at a hospital and was in an unknown condition as of Sunday afternoon.
