Cubs Designate Edwin Jackson For Assignment To Make Room For Rafael Soriano
(CBS) Right-hander Edwin Jackson's rocky tenure in Chicago is over.
After beating the Braves on Sunday night, the Cubs designated Jackson for assignment, meaning they have 10 days to trade, waive or release him. The move was made to make room on the roster for right-handed reliever Rafael Soriano, who has been working his way into form in the minor leagues.
It brings an end to a rough two-and-half-year stint in Chicago for Jackson, who went 14-33 with a combined 5.18 ERA while a member of the Cubs' rotation in 2013 and 2014. This season, Jackson was relegated to being a long reliever and had compiled a 2-1 record with a 3.19 ERA.
Coupling those struggles with his signing four-year, $52-million deal prior to the 2013 season, Jackson was often a lightning rod for criticism as the Cubs struggled in 2013 and 2014. The Cubs will have to eat about $15.6 million left on Jackson's contract, per reports, assuming he clears waivers.
The 31-year-old Jackson was informed of the move Sunday after the game by Cubs manager Joe Maddon and assistant general manager Randy Bush, the Tribune reported.
"I wish nothing but the best to the organization and the city of Chicago," Jackson told the Tribune.
