FTC Has Plan To Give Refunds To Buyers Of Trudeau Diet Book

CHICAGO (AP) -- The Federal Trade Commission has a plan to issue refunds to more than 800,000 customers who bought a now imprisoned television pitchman's weight-loss book.

U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman on Tuesday approved plans to send checks to purchasers of Kevin Trudeau's "The Weight Loss Cure `They' Don't Want You to Know About." The agency will use an address list turned over by Trudeau.

Court filings indicate consumers would receive about $11 each in a first round of checks. If they cash the check, they'll get more money.

The money will come from the approximately $8 million in Trudeau assets recovered by a receiver after Trudeau failed to pay a $37.6 million civil penalty levied by Gettleman in 2007.

Gettleman gave attorneys for Trudeau until October to file any objections to the plan.
