Cubs Acquire Dan Haren From Marlins

(CBS) The Cubs have added depth to their pitching rotation.

Chicago acquired right-hander Dan Haren from Miami early Friday afternoon, a source confirmed to 670 The Score, just a couple hours before the 3 p.m. non-waiver trade deadline. The 34-year-old Haren is 7-7 with a 3.42 ERA and 1.09 WHIP (10th-best in National League) this season. In return, the Cubs are sending two prospects to the Marlins: shortstop Elliot Soto and right-hander Ivan Pineyro, according to the Miami Herald's Clark Spencer.

Soto is hitting .275 with no homers, 18 RBIs and a .702 OPS in 88 games at Double-A Tennessee. Pineyro is 7-5 with a 3.69 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 19 starts at Double-A. Both prospects would've been available in the Rule 5 Draft this offseason.

Haren has 88 strikeouts in 129 innings. He has good control, with a walk rate of 1.7 per nine innings. He does have a tendency to get hurt by the home run ball, giving up 21 blasts this season, eighth-most in the majors. He's allowed at least 27 homers in each of the past three seasons.

Haren will fit in at the back end of the Cubs' rotation and solidify a fifth spot that's been inconsistent throughout the season. He's making about $10.2 million this season, which means the Cubs will be responsible for about $3 million.

Haren has pitched in the postseason twice -- in 2004 with the Cardinals and 2006 with the Athletics. His playoff ERA is 3.26.

The Cubs nearly acquired Haren in 2012 from the Angels that would've sent reliever Carlos Marmol out, but Chicago was wary after viewing Haren's medical records.

The Sun-Times first reported that the Cubs had traded for Haren.
