Coast Guard Searching For Suburban Woman Who Went Missing In Lake Michigan

(CBS) -- A search continues this morning for the body of a 20-year-old Carol Stream woman who struggled while swimming in Lake Michigan Friday night off Porter Beach near Chesterton, reports WBBM's Mike Krauser.

The woman was swimming with two friends in high waves, conditions that are ripe for rip currents. From the beach, people could see the three were struggling.

Two people, including an off-duty life guard, went to their aid, helping two of the women get safely to shore. The third went under and was not seen again. Authorities identified the woman as 20-year-old Chase Froese.

The search for the woman went into the night and continued Saturday morning with the Coast Guard in the air and in the water and DNR officers and fire department divers conducting a recovery operation.

The choppy water conditions have hurt the efforts made by sonar and video to find her as a family copes with the crisis.

The 20-year-old described by friends as an avid rock climber world traveler and free spirit recently vising Rome. Froese is a junior attends Calvin College in Grand Rapids.

Dave Benjamin, the executive director of the Surf Rescue Project, offers some advice if you are caught in a rip current.

"If you fight a current, if you exhaust all of your energy swimming, you are going to submerge," Benjamin said. "If you get caught in a dangerous current, do nothing. Flip over on you back and float and concentrate on staying at the surface of the wa
