Joe Maddon: No Talks Of Javier Baez Promotion Just Yet

(CBS) Triple-A Iowa infielder Javy Baez has been on a tear since returning last week after missing nearly two months with a fractured ring finger. With the I-Cubs down to their final out Monday night and trailing by a run at Colorado Springs, Baez drilled a three-run double to right field that capped a rally for a 12-10 win. That gave Baez 12 RBIs and a .357 batting average in the past 10 games.

So, given all the discussion about Baez getting called up to the big leagues before his injury in early June and his recent play, when could the Cubs call him up? Perhaps before the rosters expand in September?

"I really don't know that," Maddon said in an interview with Jason Goff on 670 The Score on Tuesday. "Right now, the guys on the field are in pretty good shape. More than likely, something like that would happen after an injury, which I hope won't happen. It's good for him to keep it going (at Iowa) ... perculate a little bit on the Triple-A level, let him do that. If a guy's having some success, it doesn't mean he's got to be brought up immediately. Let him continue to get better, learn his craft -- I'm all about that. I think sometimes in our business now, our industry, guys are pushed up a little too quickly and haven't had a chance to really work things through. So I'm really happy, I like this guy, I think he's going to be a really good major league baseball player. But right now, the conversation has not been about him coming up anytime soon."

Baez is hitting .319 with 10 homers, 41 RBIs and a .959 OPS in 44 games at Triple-A this season.

Listen to Maddon's full interview below. He also talks about how he's willing to use recently acquired reliever Tommy Hunter in high-leverage situations, Jon Lester's strong performance of late and much more.
