Elgin Man Charged With Barricading Himself Inside Home With 3 Kids

(STMW) -- A 40-year-old man has been charged with barricading himself and three children inside his Elgin home for nearly six hours early Monday.

Victor M. Hernandez faces three felony counts of unlawful restraint for the incident that started about 2:30 a.m. at his home in the 1000 block of Dundee Road, according to Elgin police.

Officers responded to a disturbance and spoke to witnesses who said the man became angry and battered his girlfriend and a male at the home, police said.

Hernandez then locked his girlfriend and the male out of the home, and stayed inside with three small children — who aren't his — locked in a bathroom, police said. Officers tried to negotiate with the suspect but he wouldn't respond.

The Tactical Response Team and Crisis Negotiations Unit arrived and attempted to negotiate with the suspect until 8:10 a.m., when he came onto his front porch and surrendered.

The response team entered the home and rescued the three children, who were not harmed. No weapons were found inside the home.

Hernandez also was charged with a misdemeanor count of domestic battery, police said. He was ordered held on a $100,000 bond at a Tuesday court hearing, according to the Kane County sheriff's office.
