Most Of The Dozens Of Cats Found Living In Belmont Central House Have Been Rescued, Group Says

(CBS) -- A cat rescue group official says most of the cats that had filled a house and were nuisances in the Belmont Central neighborhood have been rescued, the house emptied of cats and then boarded up.

Dave de Funiak executive director of the Tree House Humane Society says there are now dozens of cats that are being put up for adoption and, if not able to be adopted, to be put into managed cat colonies in order to act as rat abatement in some communities.

He thinks that, when all is said and done, there will have been as many as 120 cats in the house at 6207 West Roscoe.

"This is what happens when people take in cats…don't get them spayed and neutered and it's obvious, these cats multiplied inside the house over the course of probably 2-3 years," he says.

Migdalia Ortiz lives next door to the house and is excited. She says, "The cats seem like they're going to get the help they need and we finally seem to be getting the help we need with the house and the order and the flies and such."

de Funiak says about 25 cats had to be euthanized.

He says Tree House Humane Society will set traps outside the house for any of the cats that were not inside at the time all the rescues were taking place today and that come back to be fed.

He says Tree House Humane Society is looking for people to adopt the cats or foster them. He also says the group is in need of supplies such as crates, food and litter.

Meanwhile, the Ortiz family, and maybe others, will have to begin the clean-up of cat droppings on their properties. Ortiz says it could be an involved process of replacing a couple of feet of soil on their property.
