Video Shows Father's Last Moments Before Wood Dale Tent Collapse

(CBS) -- Why would a family trying to escape a storm be directed by police to go right into harm's way?

CBS 2 has obtained never-before-seen video of a deadly storm that knocked down a festival tent in Wood Dale, fatally injuring Steven Nincic, a father of two.

The storm came on suddenly, just before 3 p.m. on Aug. 2. as powerful wind and rain picked up.

Surveillance video shows people leaving Prairie Fest at 2:50 p.m. A minute later, a family of four appears to be leaving when two officers at the gate get up and lead them to the tent.

The family attorney, Lou Cairo, saw the video for the first time Monday.

"It's most unfortunate that anyone would make that decision," he says. "I mean, that's a decision, that if they were trained in an evacuation plan, they never would have made."

Video shows Nincic, 35, pointing in the direction of the tent. Others see what they are doing, and follow. But not everybody; one woman and child ran for it. So did others.

At 2:53 p.m., the tent is still standing. Ten seconds later, it is down.

Nincic would die from his injuries.

"I'm sure, without talking to these police officers, their intent was nothing more than the purest of intents," Cairo says.

The day after the incident, CBS 2 asked Wood Dale police why they didn't evacuate everybody from the festival when the storm hit. They said the storm just came on too fast.

Police officials could not be reached for comment Monday.
