Governor's Day At Illinois State Fair Draws Protesters

(CBS) -- Party crashers tried to dampen the mood at the Illinois State Fair for the first Republican Governor's Day in 13 years.

Governor Bruce Rauner's arrival by motorcycle revved up a noisy protest.

Home care workers aligned with the opposing Democratic Party were bused in from all corners of the state.

"Speaker Madigan knows that I care," Rauner said. "I don't want to have to cut social services."

"We are here to express our outrage at the cuts that Governor Rauner has put on the table," said James Muhammad of the SEIU.

The catcalls from outside the event were so loud that speakers had to acknowledge them.

"We cannot continue to do the same thing we've done for another ten years," said Republican State Senator Christine Radogno.

Rauner's keynote speech all but declared powerful House Speaker Mike Madigan public enemy number one.

"They have devastated us with debt, deficit, high taxes, unfunded schools, cronyism, corruption…they've created a mess from one-party rule from King Madigan and the Chicago political machine," Rauner said.

Yesterday, Madigan said, "My position is, number one issue facing the state of Illinois is the budget deficit and that is where the governor should be focusing."

Judging by the audience's approval, Governor Rauner's feud could drag on indefinitely.

Thursday is Democrat Day at the State Fair, and Party Chairman Mike Madigan is expected to return fire at Rauner.
