Ashley Madison Hack Data Reveals Lots Of Chicago Accounts

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Confidential Ashley Madison data, allegedly dropped into the Internet this week, seems to reveal that the website is very popular in Chicago.

In fact, the city ranks No. 10 globally in terms of the sheer number of accounts on the site, whose slogan is "Life Is Short, Have An Affair."

The city location data was crunched by Dadaviz, and it shows that Chicago has more than 162,000 accounts linked to the site.

CBS 2's Dana Kozlov reports a handful of those accounts are tied to state, county and municipal emails, although that doesn't mean accounts are the same person or that anybody actually used the service.

Gov. Rauner's administration is investigating the matter.

Ashley Madison Accounts

That's far behind the global leader, Sao Paulo, with nearly 375,000.

A hacking group reportedly released information about millions of users of Ashley Madison, which promotes and facilitates extramarital affairs.

Last month, the hackers claimed that they had stolen the Ashley Madison accounts and demanded that Ashley Madison take down its website, along with other similar sites that it operates.

On Wednesday, the group appeared to make good on that threat. The data includes emails, and reportedly some limited credit card information, along with personal details of certain account users.

"Avid Life Media [Ashley Madison's parent company] has failed to take down Ashley Madison and Established Men. We have explained the fraud, deceit and stupidity of ALM and their members. Now everyone gets to see their data."
