C.J. Edwards Is On 7-Day DL But Still Expected To Get September Call-Up To Help Cubs Bullpen

(CBS) With right-hander Jason Hammel failing to go deep into games recently and a back end of the rotation that's been spotty all season, the Cubs are one of the playoff contenders that most needs some bullpen reinforcements.

To that end, Chicago will receive some help when rosters expand on Sept. 1. The most notable arm who figures to provide relief is right-hander C.J. Edwards, who has a 3.03 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in 29 2/3 innings at Triple-A Iowa this season. Edwards recently was placed on the seven-day disabled list with a blister, but Cubs director of scouting and player development Jason McLeod said Edwards is still in line for a September call-up.

"He's put himself in position to do it," McLeod told the Chicago Sun-Times.

Edwards has walked 24 batters in just shy of 30 innings at Triple-A, and that's the main concern for the Cubs. He's pitched out of the bullpen in Double-A and Triple-A all season as a way to limit his innings.

"Even in short stints in the big leagues in spring training this year, he's proven his stuff will play against these guys," McLeod said, according to the Sun-Times. "It's just the command."
