The 'Byrne Burn': Ramp Cramp Begins This Weekend

(CBS) -- Four hundred thousand vehicles travel through the Jane Bynre Interchange every day.

But beginning Friday through Sunday and over several weekends to come, Congress Parkway and number of ramps will be closed -- part of a $600 million overhaul. Motorists are bracing for the "Byrne Burn."

"Find a different route. I'm sorry," says Tony Quigley, director of the Byrne Interchange Project.

The main artery of the project is a half-mile flyover bridge from the Dan Ryan to the Ike.

The mostly state taxpayer-paid project will be complete in 2018, but the important flyover will be complete next fall.

"This is a big job," Quigley says. "We're dealing with two interstates, 290 and 90/94. There's not a lot of space here to move traffic around."-
