Wauconda Store Robbery Ends With Clerk Fatally Shooting Suspect

(CBS) -- A store clerk shot and killed an armed robber Sunday night in northwest suburban Wauconda.

Wauconda Police Deputy Chief Thomas Bender said a masked robber walked into Kwick Shop Liquor, at 112 E. Liberty St., in Wauconda, and pointed a gun at a store clerk and customer shortly after 9 p.m.

"The patron had an opportunity to flee, and he fled. Then he also called 911. The store clerk was able to retrieve a handgun, and shot the offender," Bender said.

The unidentified suspect, believed to be in his early 20s, was taken by Wauconda Fire District personnel to Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, where he was pronounced dead at 9:42 p.m.

Bender said there is no security video of the incident, but the 24-year-old clerk has been very cooperative.

Bender said investigators are still looking into whether the clerk's gun was registered. He said it appears the clerk did nothing wrong.
