CHICAGO (STMW) — Two people were killed and eight others, including a 14-year-old girl, were wounded in shootings across Chicago Wednesday, authorities said.
Most recently, a man died after he was shot Wednesday evening in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side.
The 23-year-old was in an alley in the 1100 block of West 51st Street about 7:30 p.m. when someone approached him, pulled out a handgun and started firing, police said. He was shot in the back and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office could not immediately confirm the death Thursday morning.
Earlier Wednesday morning, a man was killed and three others were injured in a shooting in a park in the East Garfield Park neighborhood.
The shooting happened at Horan Park in the 3000 block of West Van Buren at 10:36 a.m., according to Chicago Police.
One man was shot in the head and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:07 p.m., according to police. The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified him as 23-year-old Kortney Blakes of the 3200 block of West Polk.
Another 23-year-old man was shot in the upper left shoulder; and a 22-year-old man was shot in the right leg, police said. Both were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition. A fourth victim, a man in his 20s, was shot in the abdomen and was in serious condition at Mount Sinai.
The most recent nonfatal shooting happened late Wednesday night in the Park Manor neighborhood on the South Side.
A 22-year-old man was standing outside in the 300 block of East 69th Street about 11:20 p.m. when he heard shots and realized he’d been hit, police said. He was shot in the leg and taken to St. Bernard Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. A police source said the man has gang affiliations.
Nearly two hours earlier, a 14-year-old girl was shot in the East Garfield Park neighborhood. She was standing on a corner in the 3800 block of West Adams about 9:30 p.m. when she heard shots and realized she had been hit, police said. She was shot in the right buttock and taken to Loretto Hospital in good condition.
About four minutes earlier, a man was shot in the Brighton Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side. The 20-year-old was standing on the sidewalk in the 4600 block of South Fairfield at 9:26 p.m. when two males emerged from a nearby gangway and fired at him, police said. He was shot in the left side of the body and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. A police source said the man is a documented gang member.
A man was shot in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side Wednesday afternoon. The 31-year-old was in the 400 block of North Hamlin about 1 p.m. when a silver car drove past and someone inside shot him, police said. He was shot in both feet and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
Wednesday’s first shooting happened about 4:30 a.m. in the West Elsdon neighborhood on the Southwest Side. A 32-year-old man was shot in the right thigh in the 5800 block of South Springfield, but was found a short time later near 55th and Pulaski, according to police. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in good condition.
It was not known how the man traveled the roughly three block from where he was shot to where emergency crews found him, as he was not cooperating with investigators, police said.
