By The Numbers: Jake Arrieta's Simply Ridiculous

(CBS) Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta continued his run of dominance Sunday night, firing a no-hitter to lead Chicago to a 2-0 win on the road against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Arrieta was lights out from the start, striking out 12 and walking just one while one Dodger also reached on an error.

Here are some notes on the no-hitter and statistics to put into perspective how excellent Arrieta has been -- not just Sunday but all season.

-- Arrieta's gem was the 14th no-hitter in franchise history and the first since Carlos Zambrano fired one in 2008.

-- It was the first no-hitter of Arrieta's career. The Cubs acquired him and reliever Pedro Strop in a July 2013 deal that sent pitcher Scott Feldman and minor league catcher Steve Clevenger to the Orioles.

-- With the win, Arrieta became the first 17-game winner in the major leagues. He also lowered his ERA to 2.11, which is the second-best in baseball behind Dodger right-hander Zack Greinke's 1.61 mark.

-- Arrieta has been spectacular in August, going 6-0 with a 0.43 ERA. The last pitcher to have six wins in a month and an ERA that low was Jim Kaat in September 1974, according to ESPN.

-- In Arrieta's last 14 starts, he's faced 378 batters and allowed just one homer, according to CSN Chicago research guru Christopher Kamka. In that stretch, he's 11-1 with a 1.07 ERA and 0.76 WHIP.

-- With Sunday's performance, Arrieta became the first Cubs pitcher since Greg Maddux in 1992 to record 14 straight quality starts, according to STATS INC.
