Report: Yankees Win Claim On White Sox Closer David Robertston, But Trade Appears Unlikely

(CBS) The Yankees won a claim on White Sox closer David Robertson, but a trade doesn't seem likely, CBSSports.com MLB insider Jon Heyman reported Monday morning.

Comfortably holding the second wild-card spot, New York is looking to add difference-makers in its postseason push, and its claim also blocked Toronto and Houston from being able to negotiate a deal for Robertson. Out of the playoff race, Chicago presumably put Robertson on waivers to assess his value and see if an offer blew them away, as there's no harm in doing so.

Before signing a four-year deal with the White Sox last offseason, the 30-year-old Robertson spent his first seven MLB seasons with the Yankees. Robertson has been superb this season, compiling a 2.60 ERA and 0.88 WHIP while converting 27 of 33 save chances. Robertson has about $38 million left on his contract.

The deadline for teams to acquire players and have them eligible for postseason play comes at 11 p.m. CT Monday.
