Cubs' Kyle Schwarber Out At Least 3-5 Days With Rib Cage Strain

(CBS) The Cubs will be without rookie catcher/outfielder Kyle Schwarber for at least three to five days as he deals with a right rib cage strain, the team said Friday morning.

Schwarber could be out longer than that, as the Cubs will re-evaluate him after that three-to-five-day window. Given that they have a comfortable lead for the second NL wild-card spot, the Cubs figure to be cautious with Schwarber as well.

Schwarber suffered the injury while taking batting practice before Wednesday's loss to the Reds, he said. Schwarber had pain and was scratched from the lineup.

Schwarber is hitting .270 with 13 homers, 38 RBIs and a .917 OPS in 48 games. His absence will likely mean more playing time in the outfield for Chris Denorfia, Chris Coghlan and the recently acquired Austin Jackson. Regular third baseman Kris Bryant could also see time in the outfield if needed.

Schwarber will miss the entirety of this weekend series against the Diamondbacks at Wrigley Field. Chicago then plays three games at St. Louis starting Monday.
