Alshon Jeffery Returns To Practice For Bears

By Chris Emma--

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (CBS) -- For the first time since training camp in Bourbonnais, the Bears have their top receiver on the field. Alshon Jeffery was in action Wednesday at Halas Hall, though limited in shorts.

This was the first sighting of Jeffery on the field since he suffered what the Bears have termed as a calf strain suffered on Aug. 12.

"It was encouraging to see him out there running routes and doing his thing," coach John Fox said.

The Bears are required to release their first injury report Wednesday evening, where further insight to the health of Jeffery should be given. Receivers Eddie Royal and Marquess Wilson were both full participants during the open portion of practice, back on the field for the second time this week.

Speaking after practice, Jeffery couldn't confirm that he's set to play in Sunday's season opener with Green Bay. For now, he's taking it one day at a time.

"Just staying focused and keeping a positive mindset," Jeffery said. "Don't be down on myself."

On Tuesday morning, Bleacher Report reported that Jeffery "has not been given a new contract by the Bears, and because of that, does not want to play poorly in any game and risk further injury at this point in time." Jeffery's agent denied that claim, saying it's not true.

"That will take care of itself," Jeffery said of his contract, denying the report entirely.

Jeffery has 174 catches and 17 touchdowns the past two seasons in Chicago and is the Bears' top receiver entering his fourth year with the team. Chicago hosts Green Bay at noon on Sunday at Soldier Field.
