No Car? Not A Problem For Some Uber Drivers

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Want to drive for Uber, but you don't have a car? No problem.

Uber will now lease you one.

It's new program designed to get more drivers from under-served communities behind the wheel.

Thursday's job fair at St. Sabina church looked like a typical Uber event.

But unlike the others, many of the people in attendance didn't have the one thing an Uber driver needs

A car.

That's no longer a problem, because Uber will now lease you a car, CBS 2's Dorothy Tucker reports.

'This new program tells me you're not only going to help people get a job, but you're moving away the barrier that keeps them from getting a job," said St. Sabina's Michael Pfleger.

Now, people like Roderick Taylor, a father of three who lost his job last month, can now work for Uber and get rid of his old car.

"It's got almost 200,000 [miles]," said Taylor. "We've put a lot of miles on it carting around kids. This is a real opportunity to help us get around and make some money at the same time."

Uber is offering drivers a chance to lease cars for a security deposit of only $250, much less than most leases that require a down payment of $1,000.

And the the monthly payments of $75 to $175 are less than half the cost of traditional leases.

The company also explained that it's working with financial institutions to offer loans to Uber drivers even if they have no credit, little credit or questionable credit.
