Blackhawks Re-Sign Marcus Kruger

(CBS) Shortly after the Blackhawks dealt forwards Kris Versteeg and Joakim Nordstrom to Carolina, they re-signed center Marcus Kruger to a one-year deal.

Kruger had been waiting for Chicago to finalize its cap-clearing efforts this offseason, with the deal of Versteeg and Nordstrom proving to be the final piece of the puzzle. Terms of Kruger's deal weren't released by the team.

Kruger, 25, tallied seven goals and 10 assists while playing in 81 games last season. He added four points in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, including a triple-overtime goal in Game 2 of the Western Conference Final. Kruger was part of Chicago's Stanley Cup championships in 2013 and 2015.

A native of Stockholm, Sweden, Kruger has recorded 84 points -- 28 goals and 56 assists -- over 287 career games with the Blackhawks.

Chicago added defensemen Dennis Robertson and Jake Massie, plus a 2017 a fifth-round selection, in its deal with Carolina.

The Blackhawks open their season on Oct. 7 against the New York Rangers, an evening in which they will raise the 2015 championship banner.
